I was at University in Venice and Florence so it was lovely to go back to Venice not as an impoverished student but as a luxury traveller in true Azure style.
Venice’s unique beauty and charm remains unchanged, every Calle tells a story. Built on 117 islands with 200 bridges over 400 canals even the figures are impressive, It is a city where walking is a pleasure and an assault on the senses. You run the gauntlets not just of some of the most beautiful designer shops in Europe but a kaleidoscope of architectural styles (from Baroque to Renaissance to Gothic) the culmination of which is Piazza San Marco. Venice stuns, amazes, bewilders but never disappoints and it was glorious to experience this city again in such style. One of the highlights of our brief visit was the secret tour of the Palazzo Ducale and the intrigues of Casanova!
I stayed at the superlative The Gritti Palace right on the Grand Canal. My room was one of the most beautiful I have ever stayed in and I hated leaving. The hotel and service is faultless, the food exquisite and the location breathtaking. Nothing beats sitting on their terrace bar right on the Canal Grande and watching life unfold on the main artery of the city sipping a cool Bellini in the sun. They have an epicurean cookery school too which we sampled and while I will never be able to emulate the chef –What an experience! We also had lunch at the fascinating and splendid Aman Venicewhich is possibly the best renovation I have ever seen, coffee at the tiny gem of a hotel the Palazzo Giovanelli, cocktailsat the Ca’ Sagredowith its magnificent frescos and dinner at the stunning Terrazza Danieli restaurant at the Hotel Danieli. To say we were spoilt with the very best Venice has to offer is an understatement.
