It was very strange flying into Venice Airport and not going into the city. Rather than taking the typical water taxi, instead we hired a car and drove up into the Dolomites to the picture perfect town of Cortina. We then arrived at Hotel Cristallo – one of the most fashionable ski resorts in Italy, It makes a perfect combination with Venice especially during Carnival week in February –culture, carnival parties and ski.
The Cristallo Hotel Spa & Golfwhich sits on the mountainside just above Cortina like a Dowager Duchess overseeing her kingdom is a magnificent Grand Hotel in Classic Alpine style. Recently refurbished, the hotel is exquisitely elegant but with all the traditional features maintained. Hand painted doors, wonderful wood panelling throughout. The warmth of the welcome couldn’t be faulted and we were just simply thrilled to be there.
The hotel has something for everyone. During the ski season The Cristallo have a speedy 10 minute shuttle to the centre of charming Cortina. This is where the ski shop is located, where you can rent out your much needed ski gear. They also run a very handy service where they can drop you off at various different ski lifts and pick you up from a fabulous day skiing where you can retire back the Ski Room. On your return there is hot wine on tap to help the relaxation process flow while you are changing out of your ski boots, hot racks for boots –you name it they have thought of it!
Sadly our three day trip flew past. We were so well looked after by the staff at the Cristallo that we are all desperate to go back. In the summer the mountainsare covered in flowers, they have a classic car rally and it must be just the most beautiful place to visit, our next trip perhaps?
