On a cold Friday morning in February, we escaped the winter chill and headed to Pisa for a long weekend and stepped out into the beautiful Tuscan sunshine. We then transferred over to the city of Florence, whilst taking in the glorious scenic views, we were soon enough checked in to our suites at the Hotel Brunelleschi, a stunning boutique hotel, centrally located that many of the rooms have direct views of the Duomo. A beautiful location providing as much culture, religion and mystery as you’d like, all intertwined into one. The hotel has a family feel here, once owned by Fillippo Brunelleschi (hence the hotel name!) who was one of the key architects and engineers of the Italian Renaissance.
In the early evening we walked to the Hotel Savoy for drinks and canapés before returning to the a romantic-style dinner in their restaurant Santa Elisabetta:with the charming and sophisticated surroundings, it was the perfect way to end a day of exploring. The following morning we were woken by the bells of the Duomo at 7am, after a quick breakfast we walked through the city to the Four Seasons Firenze, where after a tour of their historic buildings we stopped for a fabulous lunch and learned about the stunning original frescoes throughout the property.
We then drove to the coastal town of Viareggio and stayed at the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemontewhich is positioned on the sea front with its own private beach club, perfect for the more busy summer months. You can also take advantage of the Michelin-starred restaurant Piccolo Principeduring the summer months. We dined at the Regina restaurant which specialises in Tuscan and VersilianCuisine. The Reginacouldn’t be positioned in a more beautiful location, overlooking the splendid panorama of the Apuane Alps and the Viareggio shoreline, tucking into the refined traditional cuisine accompanied by only the finest of wine.
This was the perfect itinerary to explore two very different parts of Italy. Combining the magical city of Florence with
the coastal delights of Viareggio is a great twin-centre for families, couples and friends and when you are combining such an itinerary with stunning hotels, wonderful food and great company, this makes the perfect blend for a wonderful weekend in Italy.
